Calle de la serpie

serpie street, calle de la serpie cartagena de indias.

It is said that very often the inhabitants of this street heard in the night hours a noise like something big crawling on the pavement and with snake bells. No one was able to explain what they heard, since they were not brave enough to look out.

When in 1608 the mayor of the city (Don Antonio de Viloria) wanted to personally watch the street, one night the mystery was finally revealed. Suddenly, out of nowhere came a huge snake, menacing as it was: phosphorescent eyes, writhing and noisily waving the large bells on its tail. The mayor, who was not just anybody facing horrors, traced magic figures in the air and that he had learned when he was on the island of Santo Domingo.
